Vanax were asked to carry out a full conversion on a Ford Transit XLWB for a well known civil engineering firm. The remit was to maximise the potential payload by using light materials wherever possible.
The conversion had to allow two separate working areas, the front section for computer and CCTV operation, the rear for all tools and consumables needed for pipeline inspection. We started by insulating the computer areas and midway bulkhead which was then overlaid with polyester coated plywood for an easy wipe clean finish. Next came a custom built Sortimo racking solution incorporating a work area, drawer units and roller shuttered shelves.
With the use of an customer supplied 8000 watt diesel powered generator we fitted a RCD unit in the rear given protection for a total of 63 Amps of current. A total of 10 x 240 Volt heavy duty double socket outlets were located in the front compartment to power a bank of monitors, desktop computer and CCTV control equipment.
The rear section featured heavy duty 18mm plywood shelving and storage for road signs, traffic cones and warning barriers.
Two CCTV cable reels were then mounted above the generator on the offside and tool store on the nearside. A PPE cupboard was also constructed for the storage of jackets, protective trousers and personal equipment.
An Eberspacher D2 diesel heater with 7 day digital timer and anti-frost option was also installed, with a split feed to heat the front CCTV computer compartment and the PPE cupboard, ensuring dry clothes no matter the weather.
The van had LED mini lightbars fitted to the front and rear with high output LED worklamps at both the side and rear doors.
The build time was approximately ten days from arrival of the van and the final conversion will provide reliable mobile CCTV operation facilities for a number of years.
